Editor's Note
#foolkmagazine’s December last issue opens with Paolo Pietrangeli’s “Amore amore amore, amore un c...”, a sort of anthological concept album dedicated to the various facets of love, with plenty of political and social allusions. We speak to the Roman singer-songwriter about his latest release, not without reflecting on his artistic past. Firstly, the folk & world music page features “Silentski” from the Belgian duo Naragonia, among the most active outfit in the bal folk circuit. Then you find “Call to Prayer”, the project teaming up the Tunisian singer Ghalia Benali and the Austrian violist Romina Lischka, and “Optimisme”, the new offspring of the Malian rockers Songhoy Blues. Finally, we offer “Wake Up Calls”, our recommended album not to be missed where the English composer has  blended endangered British bird calls with his music. Back to Italy we look at song-writing from the perspectives of Simona Colonna who has released “Curima Curima” and Rosella Seno, the remarkable singer on “Pura come una bestemmia”. Strings at fore stage with “One Man One Mandolin”, a solo album from Mario Poletti, former member of Lou Dalfin and founder of Teres Outes String Band. It follows “Mitclàn”, the intriguing MeVsMyself’s vocal experimentations. Valerio Corzani’s pic features Roy Paci.
We cannot fail to mention two artists who are gone these days. Legendary guitarist Tony Rice, the flatpicking giant, has died at the age of 69. He has been one of the most influential and inspiring musicians in the bluegrass world. The second loss is Patrick Novara from Lyon, a mainly Italian resident artist (Ciapa Rusa, Tri Muzike, Moni Ovadia, Liquid Clarinets), great master of wind instruments and a fine connoisseur of music, who has passed away aged 56.
Before leaving you to read our issue 483, as is the end-of-year ritual, we would like to point out our top of the world records, the 10 albums that we have loved so much. Also, it’s a great pleasure for us to reveal the name of Foolk Magazine album of the year which is Fratelli Mancuso’s “Manzamà” (Squilibri), the reasons can all be found in the special focus we have produced here.
