Con l’arrivo dell’autunno, è tempo di un nuovo numero fresco di #FoolkMagazine, che si apre con la nostra cover story dedicata a “La spada e l’incanto” di Massimo Donno. Il nuovo album, ispirato al "Cantico delle Creature" di San Francesco d’Assisi nel quale la canzone d'autore incontra l’universo world in una suggestiva dimensione corale. Il cantautore salentino ci guida attraverso il suo percorso artistico e ci racconta le ragioni di questo progetto. Grandi firme ci onorano anche in questo numero, a cominciare da Enrico de Angelis che ricorda Fausto Amodei, scomparso la scorsa settimana a 91 anni in “Fausto Amodei, una chitarra non illibata ma innamorata”. Sul fronte recensioni, vi proponiamo una scaletta davvero imperdibile: “Transform Me then Into a Fish” dell'ottantaquattrenne patriarca del folk inglese Martin Carthy (il nostro disco consigliato della settimana), la fusione tra oud e chitarra flamenca in “Al-Hambra” di Ahmed Mukhtar & Ignacio Lusardi Monteverde e la forza acustica dei ruandesi The Good Ones con “Rwanda Sings with Strings”, prodotto da Ian Brennan. Ultima tappa in Australia con “Give Water to Birds” del duo Zöj. Proseguiamo poi il nostro viaggio nell’edizione 2025 del Premio Andrea Parodi, dando spazio ad altri cinque artisti che saliranno sul palco del Teatro Massimo e presentando gli ospiti delle tre serate del contest cagliaritano. Nella sezione Luoghi della Musica, un’altra firma illustre, Franco Castelli, racconta l’edizione 2025 de La Viuleta, rassegna dedicata al canto spontaneo che si svolge a Viù (in provincia di Torino). Poi ci spostiamo nel savonese per un reportage sul Premio Loano per la Musica Tradizionale Italiana/RiGenerazioni Festival. Chiudiamo con Corzani Airlines che ci porta al Kriol Festival 2019 di Santiago, Capo Verde, per presentarci Djam Neguin.

Apprendiamo che è mancato il leggendario bassista Danny Thompson all’età di 86 anni. Gran signore contrabbasso per stile e indole. Strumentista dalla straordinaria tecnica, che univa precisione jazzistica a un’espressività profonda e istintiva. Il suo stile fondeva influenze folk, blues e musica classica con una sensibilità improvvisativa tipica del jazz. Grande abiità di adattarsi a generi diversi lo rese un collaboratore ideale per artisti molto eterogenei. Thompson fu attratto dalla scena folk più progressive, entrando a far parte dei Pentangle. Sotto l’egida creativa di Joe Boyd, Thompson ha suonato negli album Five Leaves Left e Bryter Layter di Nick Drake, prima di instaurare un’incredibile collaborazione decennale con John Martyn. Tra i tanti ha suonato con Ronnie Scott, Tom Paxton, Donovan, David Sylvian, Kate Bush, Loreena McKennitt, Tim Buckley, Davey Graham e Richard Thompson fatto parte dei Blues Incorporated di Alexis Korner. Ha partecipato a una moltitudine di progetti, tra cui quelli world con il gruppo Songhai. Da solista ha pubblicato quattro album di gran tenore tra il 1987 e il 1005.

The Salento songster walks us through his artistic journey and this latest project. We have learned of the passing of legendary bassist Danny Thompson at the age of 86. A true gentleman of the double bass, both in style and spirit. A musician of extraordinary technique, he combined jazz precision with deep, instinctive expressiveness. His style blended folk, blues, and classical influences with an improvisational sensitivity rooted in jazz. His remarkable ability to adapt to different genres made him an ideal collaborator for a wide range of artists. Thompson was drawn to the progressive folk scene, becoming a founding member of Pentangle. Under the creative guidance of Joe Boyd, he played on Nick Drake’s “Five Leaves Left” and “Bryter Layter” before embarking on an incredible decade-long collaboration with John Martyn. Among many others, he performed with Ronnie Scott, Tom Paxton, Donovan, David Sylvian, Kate Bush, Loreena McKennitt, Tim Buckley, Davey Graham, and Richard Thompson, and was part of Alexis Korner’s Blues Incorporated. He contributed to a multitude of projects, including world music collaborations in the band Songhai. As a solo artist, he released four stunning albums between 1987 and 2005.
