Musical bands in Puglia are the focus of the cover story in this issue. It is a complex world, dense with history and music, but also deeply connected to the future. Andrea Carlino interviewed Emanuele Raganato, a musician, conductor, and scholar of the Puglia band phenomenon. Between the past and the present, they discussed the crucial role of these bands in the diffusion of melodrama and the Italian language, their connections with emigration and the origins of jazz, and the tensions between tradition and innovation leading up to recent regional protection policies.
