Il numero natalizio è aperto dal focus su The Klezmatics in occasione delle celebrazioni del quarantennale della band con la ristampa del loro capolavoro “Rhythm+Jews Revisited” e di “Woody Guthrie’s Happy Joyous Hanukkah". Al WOMEX abbiamo intervistato due colonne della formazione: Frank London e Lorin Sklamberg. Segue una retrospettiva sull’ artista e circandeira pernambucana Severina Baracho da Silva “Dona Biu” (1953 – 2025). Ancora due doverosi ricordi per grandi artisti che sono andati via. A 76 anni ci ha lasciati Pasquale Minieri, musicista, compositore visionario, produttore e ingegnere del suono, è stato una figura centrale della ricerca e della musica d'autore. Dal Canzoniere del Lazio, formazione di riproposta creativa delle musiche di tradizione orale ai Carnascialia, progetto di ricerca libero al cui unico album pubblicato vi rimandiamo come lavoro imprescindibile, alla collaborazione con Mauro Pagani nel suo album solista. Passata quella formidabile stagione, lo ricordiamo come produttore e tecnico del suono con Avion Travel, Almamegretta, Capossela, Nada e Baglioni, ma anche come responsabile del suono per la Casa del Jazz di Roma.

È scomparso a 84 anni Rod Stradling, organettista e gran signore, definito da Ian A. Anderson: “l'Alexis Korner della rinascita della English Country Music”. Dalla gestione di club innovativi a Londra negli anni '60 alla fondazione, intorno al 1970, del degli Oak, della Old Swan Band, parte della English Country Blues Band, divenuti poi Tiger Moth e con Edward II & The Red Hot Polkas. Ha curato il sito e l’etichetta Musical Traditions. Ricordiamo la sua collaborazione con i piemontesi Tre Martelli che fece conoscere al mondo inglese. To wrap things up, Valerio Corzani’s back cover feature captures harpist Alina Bzhezhinska in full flow on stage at the 2025 Otium Festival.

We pay tribute to two artists who have recently left us. At 76, we’ve lost Pasquale Minieri, a musician, visionary composer, producer, and sound engineer who was a titan of Italian research and “musica d’autore”. From his work with Canzoniere del Lazio – reimagining oral traditions – to the boundary-pushing Carnascialia (their only published recording cannot be missed) and his collaborations with Mauro Pagani, his influence was immense. We remember him as the sonic architect for the likes of Avion Travel, Almamegretta, Capossela, Nada, and Baglioni, as well as his vital role at Rome’s Casa del Jazz.

We also bid farewell to Rod Stradling, who passed away at 84. A master melodeon player and a true gentleman, Rod was famously dubbed by Ian A. Anderson as "the Alexis Korner of the English Country Music revival” From running cutting-edge London clubs in the '60s to founding Oak and the Old Swan Band, his fingerprints were all over the scene, later evolving into Tiger Moth and Edward II & The Red Hot Polkas. Through his Musical Traditions site and label, he was a tireless archivist; we fondly remember his work with Piedmont’s Tre Martelli, a collaboration that bridged the gap between Italian and English folk. For a true sense of his legacy, the 2021 collection "Treacle & Bread" remains essential listening.
