Editor's Note
Welcome to # 463 of our magazine featuring Donatello Pisanello on the cover. "Ops" is an organetto diatonico (melodeon) solo performance, recorded live in the studio: twelve improvisations that embrace traditional styles and contemporary sounds. We caught up with the Salento accordionist to focus his latest work, but also to discuss the experience of OSIMU, the free improvation meeting, and to look at his future solo projects and with his band Officina Zoè. For the world music scene, from Ukraine we propose DakhaBrakha’s “Alambari”. We also deal with “Live at the Sydney Opera House" performed by the Egyptian-Australian oud virtuoso Joseph Tawadros with a Sydney Symphony Orchestra. In southern Africa, then, for the two excellent 4CD-Box sets published by Michael Bairds’ SWP, “Luangwa To Livingstone” and “Music from Barotseland”, which offer field recorded music from Zambia. We move to the American continent for Orkesta Mendoza’s “Curandero” and “Canjerè” from the Brazilian singer Luzia. Finally, we are in the land of the dragon to review “Kistvaen”, the latest release from the Welsh band Calan. The jazz page offers Francesca Naibo’s “Namtoulee”, whilst contemporary music column give you “super-group Materiali Sonori University with “Coppi Arrive (live 1989)“. Finally, the French singer Laetitia Sadier.is under Valerio Corzani’s lenses.
