Editor's Note
“Suddissimo”, the album-story dedicated to Matteo Salvatore, the legendary Gargano’s storyteller, released by Dario Muci, Enza Pagliara, Roberto Licci and Emanuele Licci, is the album of the month of April that opens #foolkmagazine issue 450. A multi-layered project where music and theatre meet and which, at the same time, opens a space-time window as it contains images of the concert that Matteo Salvatore held in France at the invitation of Rina Santoro who, among other things, embellishes the thick booklet with her story. We caught up with Dario Muci and Enza Pagliara, currently waiting to return to Italy from Australia due to the lockdown, and Emanuele Licci to tell us about this work originated in that excellent creative forge that is proving to be Nauna Cantieri Musicali. We move to Piedmont to present the latest offering from La Mesquia (“L’arbol”). The #Casa Italia da lontano column is back featuring Carlo Massarelli, a Salentine multi-instrumentalist who has long been a Mexican resident. We move to Great Britain for “Borrowed Songs”, a notable album by the protest folksinger Ewan McLennan and then to Greece for the furious “Ormenion” of the psych-trad quintet Evritiki Zygia. Then it’s up to “Oasis”, another remarkable production from the Argentine Melingo, featuring Vinicio Capossela. The songwriting column proposes Gerardo Balestrieri’s “Canzoni del Mare Salato”, a concept album inspired to the epic of Corto Maltese. The Jazz Sounds offers Stefania Tallini and Cettina Donato’s “Piano 4hands”. It follows the review Duo Blanco Sinacori’s “Hacked Arias (Vol. 2: Vincenzo Bellini) “.Valerio Corzani’s back cover image feature the excellent tubist Theon Cross.
Finally, we want to mention two artists who have passed away: Helin Bölek, singer of the Grup Yorum, died in detention, after a long hunger strike undertaken so that the requests for freedom of expression made by the revolutionary musical group to the Turkish authorities were accepted. To find out more, follow the link to the Freemuse organization. In these days American songwriter John Prine’s gone, aged 73, due to the complications of covid-19. A reserved character, but a tremendous guitarist and poet, winner of two Grammys as folk singer, admired by the great musicians of the States. It was «pure Proustian existentialism», commented Bob Dylan.
