Editor’s note
“Blogfoolk” ’s first issue for September opens with the disc of the month, “Guerra” (translates as “War”), the latest offspring from GiroDiBanda, Salento’s explosive ensemble. The in-depth interview with their leader, trumpeter Cesare Dell'Anna, reveals the reasons behind the title of this concept-album, resulting in a mix of brass band style, jazz, Salento musical tradition and, more than anything, surprising connections with classical repertoires. Linking sonic worlds is the main feature of the two albums released by the Sicilian flutist Pietro Cernuto (leading member of Unavantaluna): “Duo Flöte-Orgel” is a collaboration with the organist Grimoaldo Macchi, while on “FriscalettiAmo”, Cernuto joins I Flauti di Toscanini Orchestra. We move on to the Baltic area for "Ilmamõtsan”, the latest release by composer, singer and multi-instrumentalist Mari Kalkun from Estonia. For live music, we feature the “Festival de La Notte della Taranta”, which took place throughout the month of August in Grecìa Salentina, with its Melpignano’s grand finale held on the 25th. Also, we report from Ailano, Basilicata, the house of “La Luna e i Calanchi”, the Feast of “Paesologia”, directed by writer and poet Franco Arminio. To conclude the Live music pages, you’ll read the chronicle of “Laboratorio Piazza De André Folk Music Meeting”, held in Sarzana (August 25th - 26th). Further reviews follow with guitarist Francesco Franciosi (aka Ciosi)’s “The big sound. Around acoustic solo flat picking and more” and Sardinian jazz displayed in Paolo Carrus New Ensemble’ s “Echi” . Instead, the contemporary music section hosts "Dedalus" by John Gilbert Colman. Our back cover, closing # 373 of “Blogfoolk”, is Valerio Corzani’s photo showing Mike Cooper, British-born, Rome-based guitarist with a long story. (traduzione di Edoardo Marcarini)
