From October 24th to 28th the eighteenth edition of WOMEX, the world music fair takes place in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Blogfoolk is amongst the Italian delegates attending. Meet us there if you come and stay tuned for our womexian live covering. Let’s introduce now to our # 378’s menu, “Doux désirs” was published by the label Dodici Lune last year, it originated from the French versatile tubist Michel Godard, whose career twisted and turned freely through jazz, classical music and improvisation, teaming up with the Egyptian master, oud virtuoso Ihab Radwan. It displays twelve original pieces composed by each of the two artists or written together, mixing Middle-Eastern structures and Renaissance music: it’s past, present and future merging upon jazz trails. During the latest edition of Talos Festival, we met Michel Godard who talks about the combination of musical worlds and looks retrospectively on his artistic life, giving out some previews of his upcoming projects. We continue on the world music path with a focus on the stunning “Yiddish Glory. The Lost Songs of WorldWar II”, a record produced by Dan Rosenberg, born from the teamwork between poet and performer Psoy Korolenko, the Russian-Canadian professor Anna Shternshis and a group of skilled classical and jazz musicians. It’s a really relevant historical and musical work narrating the stories of Eastern Europe and Soviet Jews fighting against Nazi-fascism through thought to be lost files and recordings, the ethnomusicologist Moisei Beregowski collected during WWII and the years after. From a totally different place come Malawi Mouse Boys “Score for a Film About Malawi Without Music From Malawi”, produced by Ian Brennan, always an on the road producer, dedicated to the group of young singers and musicians selling mice on the streets of the south African country, whose story has been turned into a movie by Ian’s wife, the Italian photographer and director Marilena Delli. Last stop Mexico’s Pacific coast for the Bolero anthology “Luz de Luna. The Best Boleros from the Costa Chica”, published by ARC Music. We then talk about “Incontri Live”, a celebration of the 25 years of activity of Officina Zoè, presented in a double live album, containing a selection of recordings from gigs where the band was joined by world music artists. We have the debut of Alfabeto Runico, string trio, mixing traditional music and newly-composed numbers. From our bookshelf we picked up “Le Registrazioni Ladine nella raccolta di Alfred Quellmalz (1940-1941)”, curated by ethnomusicologists Barbara Kostner and Paolo Vinati, a trilingual volume (German, Italian and Ladin) with a CD, presenting recordings promoted by the Nazi regime made in South Tyrol by a team of researchers from the Gruppe Volksmusik, led by the German ethnomusicologist Quellmalz. For the Jazz sounds column we deal with “North” from oof3, a project instigated by the venture of three Tuscan musicians, guitarist Nicola Perfetti, pianist Federico Gerini and drummer Massimiliano Furia. To complete the review section we have an unedited treat: the album displaying the found tapes of Luciano Cilio, curated by the composer and pianist Girolamo De Simone. The back cover of Blogfoolk #378 is signed by Valerio Corzani, whose camera frames vibraphonist Pasquale Mirra. (traduzione Edoardo Marcarini, revisione Ciro De Rosa)
